2012 China – Intro

Travelogue of a 2000 km tour through China in May-June 2012. Due to a business stay I had some days to travel around in China with starting point Dalian. The question arose at the beginning, where to go and what is feasible in which time. Originally the route was supposed to run further west, but was discarded due to lack of time. A detour to inner Mongolia was also rejected, as the return would have to take place on the same route. So I decided for maximum day trips of about 300 – 500 km with the destination Shanghai in nine days.

2012 China – Day 1 – 31.05.2012 – Xingcheng

Around 0700 got up, surfed and had breakfast (boiled eggs 2x, bamboo shoots, fried rice, which also contained ham). The coffee machine had only hot water, but I took it with me. A slice of white bread with jam for a total of 12Y. Afterwards I took a shower and checked out. There was sun and the temperature was about 24°C. First I got some cigarettes and a lighter down at the hotel. The saleswoman had not understood me first, because I had pointed at the cigarettes and then at the lighter. The whole thing cost 11Y. The lighter for 1Y, the cigarettes for 10Y. The cigarettes had only 0.8mg nicotine, which was once sold as lights 15 years ago, because they had only half as much nicotine as normal cigarettes. The first lighter had lasted only three days until it disintegrated into all parts, long before the gas was gone.

Risen around 0800. The yelping dog of the night had been replaced by a younger yelping dog. The window didn’t close, but it didn’t disturb. Luckily I had bought cappu before, so there was something like coffee to drink. The shower was in the bathroom without any limitations, so I wet the whole bathroom. Before I had to wait forever until hot water came. In the hotel I heard as good as nobody. I paid downstairs for another day and went towards the station to buy a ticket to Tianjin. Two counters had opened and before it there was a large crowd, which was worked off however quite fast. With the help of the LP I could buy a card without problems.

I got up without any problems around 0430. After the shower I packed my stuff, threw the network cable behind the table and left the room. Outside it was already bright and hardly anything was going on. More was already going on at the station. Numerous travellers waited in the waiting room. Since two trains should depart shortly behind each other I asked one next to me if this is already the boarding procedure. He said no, but shortly afterwards again yes, because both trains arrive at the same time. On the platform I had to wait 10 minutes until the other train left. That was a bit pointless.

The AC had worked diligently and quietly during the night. I only notice it early when I open the door to the corridor, how big the difference is between inside and outside. There was almost nothing going on on the streets. I drank some cappu and walked about 30 minutes before the train should leave for the station. As always everything was covered in a loose fog, where you could see about 5km far. The fog was certainly mixed with smog, but I couldn’t tell the difference. After the absolutely senseless scanning of the luggage and the beeping of the metal detector I went into the again gigantic departure hall and sat down to the correct gate.
