Some impressions of Finland in November 2021

A business trip took me to Finland for four days in November 2021. For me, it was my first trip to the country. I had booked a flight to Helsinki and then drove with a rental car, about 200 km to Turku and later back again. Due to the winter season it was always quite early dark and the days very short.

Turku is a historic city located on the southwest coast of Finland. It is the oldest city in Finland and served as the country’s capital from the 13th century until 1812. Turku is known for its rich cultural heritage, historic landmarks, and beautiful archipelago.

One of the most popular attractions in Turku is Turku Castle, which dates back to the 13th century. The castle was a residence for the Swedish and Russian rulers in the past and today it serves as a museum. Visitors can take a tour of the castle, learning about its history and admiring the beautiful architecture.

Another popular attraction in Turku is the Turku Cathedral, which is the mother church of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland. The cathedral dates back to the 13th century and is a fine example of Gothic architecture. Visitors can take a guided tour of the cathedral and climb to the top of the tower for a panoramic view of the city.

Turku is also known for its picturesque archipelago, which is made up of over 20,000 islands. Visitors can take a boat tour to explore the islands and admire the beautiful scenery. The archipelago is also a great destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, and swimming.
