The Castle of the Angels in Rome in Italy

This visit to the Castle of the Angels in Rome was part of our stay near Rome. The Castle of the Angels was once a refuge for the popes and is said to be directly connected to the Vatican through underground passages. In any case, the castle is built immensely massive, but as far as I know has not withstood at least once, because the defenders had given up. With 12 € entrance fee, there is besides all the sights in the castle, even as a bonus an excellent view over the city of Rome!

First Impressions of Rome in Italy

Our first visit to Rome took us first by train to the Colosseum and then on foot eventually across the entire historic city center, past the Colosseum, Trajan’s Column, Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain and many other sights. We needed first of all a day to get some overview to be able to proceed later a little more purposeful. Rome has an incredible number of sights.

The Ancient Town of Ostia Antica in Italy

We had decided on a trip to Rome in Italy. Fortunately, Rome is only a few kilometers away from the more. Sea location is too expensive, Rome is too expensive, so something in between and then still have both. That was the plan and we booked a nice apartment in Ostia Antica. Ostia Antica is a 3000 year old city that once formed the port of ancient Rome and is now mostly abandoned. The historic buildings were abandoned around 400-500 AD and the city fell into disrepair. Interestingly, this was a huge city with a few tens of thousands of inhabitants at that time with immense wealth, which is still clearly visible today.

Grande Traversata delle Alpi (GTA) 2022 – Refugio Coda to Pont Saint Martin

The last stage on the Tour 2022 led from Refugio Coda, 2200 m high, 2000 m down to the Aosta Valley to Pont Saint Martin. At the beginning, the route goes maybe two hours on a high ridge over partly dangerous places to a pass. From there it’s just 2000 m of never-ending trails down into the valley. Depending on the weather, it can be quite cold at the top. However, we had very good weather, which only got warmer towards the bottom. Down in the valley can expect one already 35 degrees. Like last time, I took a 5 kg piece of cheese down with me.

Grande Traversata delle Alpi (GTA) 2022 – Oropa to Refugio Coda

Finally, the fourth stage led from Oropa to Refugio Coda at an altitude of about 2300 meters. The path is actually quite strenuous and goes more or less always uphill past a cable car station and over a pass. Subsequently, the path often goes over large boulders and is quite long, as well as in the later course at least in bad weather crash-prone dangerous. Overall, the path is really long, but with a little luck you will be rewarded by an incredible view from the hut located at 2300 m.

Grande Traversata delle Alpi (GTA) 2022 – Refugio Madonna della Neve to Oropa

The third stage on the GTA in 2022 was from Refugio Madonna della Neve to Oropa. Oropa is a special holy place in the Alps and has a basilica major, so one of the largest churches. The way from the Refugio is quite long, since the actual stage from the previous day would actually end later. However, the overnight stay at the Refugio Madonna della Neve in summer is simply unique and definitely recommended. We therefore reached Oropa again only in the evening and had to go again this time a small detour, because the one bridge is still closed.
